Life Skills

Why?

We offer a rich, bespoke and varied curriculum in school that already provides children with a lot of opportunities to develop specific skills e.g. cooking, making friendships, washing up, staying safe etc.

Our children, however, need to consolidate and stretch that learning in different contexts.

Life skills provides that opportunity.

What?

Life Skills is curriculum time allocated to the development of life skills and preparation for adulthood.

It is a chance to explicitly teach things that appear in the EHCP and/or are raised in the annual review process.

How?

It is essential that Life Skills is planned creatively and carefully. It requires both forward planning (in order to accommodate trips and risk assessments) but will also need to be responsive and adaptive as gaps in social knowledge and skills emerge.

Each class has a ‘live’ planning document which outlines what skills, knowledge and experiences children will access. It should be clear that there is a clear and intentional journey each half term for every student.
